Overview
Alongside my professional work, I have developed a strong interest in sustainable fashion and hands-on making, teaching myself to sew during the pandemic. Since then, I have created a range of garments, including my own wedding dress.
Approach
- Self-taught through online resources, developing skills in pattern cutting, garment construction and textile handling
- Explore design through a hands-on, iterative process, from concept through to finished garment
- Select fabrics and materials with a focus on sustainability and longevity
- Apply attention to detail and craftsmanship to achieve high-quality, wearable outcomes
Outcome
This practice allows me to engage with design in a more tactile and material-driven way, strengthening my understanding of construction, form and finish. Creating garments from scratch also provides a strong sense of ownership and creative expression, as sewing enables full control over materials, colour and design choices .
Relevance
Dressmaking complements my design work by enhancing my understanding of materials, structure and production processes, as well as reinforcing creativity, problem-solving and attention to detail — all of which are transferable across product, publishing and brand design.
