Overview
Designed a commemorative programme for the 170th anniversary of Staines Amateur Regatta, combining editorial layout with variable print design to celebrate the event and its location along the River Thames.
As a former rower at Staines Boat Club, this project was a meaningful opportunity to contribute creatively to a community I have a strong personal connection with.
The Challenge
To create a visually engaging programme that not only communicates event information clearly, but also captures the heritage and natural beauty of the regatta setting, making it a memorable keepsake for attendees.
Approach
- Designed the programme layout, balancing editorial content, typography and imagery for clarity and visual appeal
- Conceptualised a cover design that reflects the full 3.5km stretch of the Thames used in the regatta
- Captured a continuous photographic sequence by taking images every 10 seconds along the river between Runnymede and Penton Hook locks
- Used HP SmartStream Designer to apply variable image technology, generating unique cover variations
- Numbered each programme to reinforce a sense of exclusivity and collectability
Outcome
Produced a distinctive and memorable programme that celebrates both the history of the regatta and its landscape, with each printed copy featuring a unique cover. The design was well received by organisers, who expressed interest in evolving the concept for future events.
Publishing Relevance
This project demonstrates strong capabilities in editorial layout, content structuring and print design, alongside innovative use of variable data to enhance reader engagement — directly applicable to publishing, including event programmes, books and branded content.
